GDCC Monthly Meeting – January 13th, 7 PM

Join the Gloucester Democrats for our first meeting of the NEW YEAR! We’ve gone back to virtual for this one in deference to the Omicron variant and safety, so joining us is as easy as logging on from home!

January 2022 News & Updates

MLK DAY OF SERVICE

Once again this year, we will be honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr by collecting food for the Open Door!

As usual we will be at Market Basket on the Saturday of MLK weekend – Saturday, January 15th from 1 to 3 PM. Anyone who wishes to volunteer that day should e-mail Mary Kingsley at marytigercat@verizon.net to check available shift times. (Due to Omicron, volunteer shifts have been limited this year.)

All GDCC members are encouraged to participate, as they can, by donating boxed cereal at the designated Open Door box truck drop off at Market Basket on the 15th!

GDCC MEMBER SUPPORT DRIVE

As the year begins, we want to encourage all of our members who are able to pay their annual dues. The GDCC has a very low annual dues threshold of only $15 a year – though of course inability to pay is never a bar on participation. We also ask that if you are able, make your contribution a recurring one. For only $5, $10 or $20 a month, you can help support the GDCC with our recurring expenses such as storage, meeting space rental and Zoom account, among other things.

2021 Caucus and June Monthly Meeting

The Gloucester Democratic City Committee (GDCC) will hold their caucus to elect convention delegates on Thursday, June 17 at the Gloucester Fraternity Club, 27 Webster St., Gloucester.

Voting to elect 16 delegates and 16 alternates to the 2021 Massachusetts Democratic State Platform Convention will be by wards, each of which has an allocated number of delegates. Registration for the caucus will open at 5:30 PM and anyone interested must be checked in by 6 PM. Participants must be registered Democrats.

This year’s state convention will be held on September 25, 2021, at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell. Democrats from across the Commonwealth will come together to adopt a new party platform for the 2022 election cycle.

The GDCC caucus will precede the June monthly meeting with special guest speaker, Boston City Councilor Lydia Edwards. Edwards has led efforts to protect Boston’s affordable housing stock through innovative and bold policy proposals and will be speaking on the HOMES Act and Affirmatively Further Fair Housing (AFFH) zoning report.

Members and friends are welcome to attend. This will be an in-person meeting event that begins with Registration and Caucus at 5:30 PM, followed by GDCC business meeting at 7 PM, and speaker program from 7:30 to 8:45 PM.

For more information contact GDCC Chair Matthew Murray with any caucus questions at chair@gloucesterdemocrats.org or at 978-239-2205.

Virtual Monthly Meeting – May 13, 2021

The Gloucester Democratic City Committee will be holding a virtual meeting on Thursday, May 13th at 7:00 PM. Members and friends may participate with video using Zoom on a computer or mobile device or may call in using a traditional phone.

Our May guest speaker, John Rosenthal, co-founder of Stop Handgun Violence, will talk about our responsibility as a state with the nation’s strictest gun ownership laws when guns are allowed to be made here and used in mass killings elsewhere. Since 2004, Massachusetts has banned the purchase and owning of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines yet gun companies are permitted to manufacture them and sell them out of state.

In April, state Democratic lawmakers, with the support of gun control advocate groups, filed HD.4192, a bill to prohibit manufacturing weapons and devices covered under the existing ban to private citizens anywhere, with an exemption for weapons that would be sold to law enforcement, the military or foreign governments.

Members should review the prior meeting’s minutes before the meeting.

This is a virtual meeting event that begins with GDCC business meeting at 7:00 PM and speaker program from approximately 7:30-8:45 PM.

Virtual Monthly Meeting – April 8, 2021

The Gloucester Democratic City Committee will be holding a virtual meeting on Thursday, April 8th at 7:00 PM. Members and friends may participate with video using Zoom on a computer or mobile device or may call in using a traditional phone.

Our April guest speakers include 350 MA North Shore members Jim Mulloy and Marcia Hart, who will discuss the recently passed bill, An Act Creating a Next Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy. As we approach Earth Day 2021, it is especially timely that the Commonwealth’s new landmark climate bill features comprehensive provisions to cut greenhouse gas emissions, build a greener economy, and prioritize equity and environmental justice.

350 MA North Shore is an initiative connecting and organizing a strong grassroots coalition to address climate change and build a better future beyond fossil fuels.

Members should review the past meetings minutes.
